The original app (built in 2018) leaned heavily on webviews from the website. After a strong season and a push to make the app a product-led, fan-first platform, we ran stakeholder workshops, defined a roadmap, and began replacing/modernising key features (Match Centre, Profile, Results) while laying design-system and motion foundations.
Since these updates, the app won the Webby People’s Voice Award (Apps & Software I Entertainment & Sports, 2025), the first time a football club app has ever won a Webby.

Product workshops & roadmap: aligned stakeholders, prioritised near-term wins and longer-term app-first bets.
Information architecture: clarified navigation and top tasks for match days and everyday use.
Design-system foundations: tokens, components, states, and motion guidelines to speed future work.
Key feature updates: new Match Centre widget, enhanced Profile (accounts & preferences), refreshed Results.
Motion & micro-interactions: subtle feedback, transitions, and loading states for clarity and pace.
Accessibility & localisation: type scale, contrast, touch targets, and multi-language considerations.

Match Centre Summary Card
- Live states, clearer hierarchy for score, timeline, and key events.
- Motion cues for state changes (e.g., goal updates) kept subtle but legible
Profile (new)
- Clean account area with Fan benefits, preferences and notifications.
- Foundation for future membership/ticketing touchpoints.
Fixtures/standings tables (updated)
- Faster scannability across fixtures and leagues/competitions.
- Consistent cards and empty/error/results states defined in system.

Discovery & alignment
Stakeholder workshops captured business priorities and fan pain points; we reframed success around app-native value instead of site parity.
Prioritise top fan tasks
We mapped must-have moments (before, during, after matches) and everyday tasks, focusing on speed to content and clarity of state.
Systemise for scale
Established design tokens, components, and motion patterns to reduce one-offs and make future features faster and more consistent.
Ship in increments
Delivered high-impact modules first (Match Centre, Profile, Results) while planning a staged reduction of webviews.

This project balanced brand, speed, and scale: moving from a site-driven app to a product that feels truly native, with a system that supports the club’s pace and ambition. This was a true partnership between product, design, and engineering: align on goals, ship in increments, and let a solid system do the heavy lifting. The award is great validation, but the real win is a faster path to future features.
